This project was done right in my hometown, and I couldn't be happier with the clients we got to work with on this project or the way it turned out!
We started with pretty much a completely blank slate here. The two desires for the project were for a deck big enough to accommodate a dining set with plenty of room to walk around it, and a fire pit area off the deck.
Our design consisted of a 16x20 cedar deck, along with a round gravel fire pit area. We added rounded landscape beds as well to soften up the design. The deck is only about 20 inches off the ground, se we elected to go with no railings to stay within the budget.
Here you can see our deck frame just about completed. We add lots of blocking to stiffen the entire structure and ensure there won't be any movement down the line. A lot of this stuff is well beyond what is required by code, but these are the things that are going to make sure your deck looks great for many years.
The cedar decking was chosen for two reasons, because of its natural beauty and warmth, as well as its great price point compared to the composite alternatives. We always use hidden fasteners so the deck has a clean smooth surface. The hidden fasteners, along with the fact there are no railings, make maintenance on this deck a lot easier.
The new view as you walk into the backyard is a huge improvement! We used loose river rock in the fire pit area to keep costs down, but the homeowner had these old pavers laying around so we used them to make a walkway from the gate to the deck. You can also see here the LED lights that we installed on the steps!
We planted a crepe myrtle in the bed on the corner of the deck, to help anchor the deck into the landscape, as well as provide some nice shade and intimacy when it grows taller.
